I agreed a set fee at the start of the project. Ive had to pay a bit more due to me changing the spec here and there but since they have had it back from paint they have spent 80 hours on it and has eaten all my budget.
Basically saying they cant afford to do it at a fixed price. It would have been nice to know about the change to the hourly rate before they did the work. e.g. making and fitting handbrake cable brackets took 8 hours
Electrics and interior still needs to be finished off and going by there timesheets so far it will probably be another 80 hours.
So i will be doing the interior and electrics and wiring the engine myself.

Sounds to me like they're just trying to fob you off, I think you'd be well within your rights just to pay them for the work they've done based on the original price you agreed i.e. if the car is 75% finished, then pay them 75% of the sum you origninally agreed. Its their fuck up after all.

Im with HardcoreSax.
sure, you can run into problems etc but they are professional fabricators etc, they are there to solve problems and engineer around them in a reasonable timescale i would imagine.
If you originally arranged a price with them then they SHOULD stick to it.
As i said to you before on MSN, im under the impression that now its all painted up minty mint BEFORE actually fitting the engine, all the loom, ecu etc etc they are worried about scratching it all over the place (which will no doubt happen) and thats why they probably wont do it.. but who knows.
Either way, i would:
a) pay them for the work they have done so far, at the original agreed price. so as hardcoresax says, if 75% is done, pay them 75%.
b) get them to finish off the job to a satisfactory level (that you are totally happy with, after all you are PAYING to get it right, not bodge anything!) at the initial set rate you were quoted.
Just remind them that its THEIR reputation at stake also. it WILL BE in many magazines, [PPC, Kit car mags, PFC, possibly Peformance Ford mag etc] and you could so easily mention their name or at least the scenario.
They should realise that they will probably get a load of business from the said project.
/me Shakes head.
Best of luck anyway taz, i hope to see it later this year!!!!

i never actually got a written quote from them, it was always an estimate.
But it now seems as though they dont have the time to do it. The guys there have been honest and said id be better off doing some of the work myself cos it will work out cheaper and take it back to them at the end for bits i cant do.
I think im gonna pay them the 80 hours theyve done plus the parts theyve bought for me and then wire it and fit out the interior and dash myself. At least i can say I worked on it at least. The main reason for me taking it to the garage in the first place was for them to do the main fabrication work and have it safe which is all done now, secondly it was the time factor because im so busy with work now. However i cant afford to pay top dollar for work i can do myself.

I can give you an estimate on costs:
Rollcage and rear subframe - £3k
Front hoop and wide arches - £3k
Spray Job - £2k
Fabrication of brackets, mountings - £2k
Then the parts:
Engine and Box - £4k
Brakes - £1k including fabricating brackets and fitting handbrake
suspension - £1k
Wheels and Tyres - £2k
Digi-Dash - £600
Interior bits - seats, harnesses etc etc already had them
Probably more ive forgotten!
