Remote Networking, anyone know anything that might help....
« on: 20, November, 2007, 17:12:02 PM »
We currently have a network on one of sites and we are looking at a second site.  One of the applications we use is held on our master computer (needs to connect to the internet to operate) and the other computers link through the network to that program.  How or what do I need to use to connect via a remote location to that computer/network.

for work,we use TSCM(Terminal Services Connection Manager) thats based on a server/computer down in burton,we use that to remotely acces our 300,00 terminals out in the uk. Basically we use Real VNC ( http://www.realvnc.com/vnc/ ) and it works wonders,we just log in to that server as if it wer a normal desktop pc at work

works well

WHat routers do you use at each site? Its possible you can use them to create a LAN to LAN VPN which woul dbe very useful.

Netgear routers have built in LAN to LAN vpn functionality for a basic setup between two sites, that would be ideal for what you need I\'d assume. Even the white consumer ones that look like little space ships have it. What model is it?

No it won\'t as it\'s not a router, sorry. The internet connections at each office terminate to a device though? Find out what it is :D

vpn bollocks?

you\'ll NEED a vpn connection between sites to maintain a reliable connection.

we use cisco routers and then watchguard x10 or x5 for our mote sites. hugely stable.

only issue you may have is the upload speed on adsl being a bottleneck. sdsl is an option although not cheap.

once you\'ve got the vpn nailed you can concentrate on connecting to the app.

how do you run it? via a network share or directly on the server?

vnc will only work for 1 concurrent connection. windows terminal server will work.

again not cheap.

yeah but VNC can only deal with 1 connection at a time. useless if you want several people to access the application.

vnc can only have 1 usable incoming connection at a time. unless you want all clients to see the same screen..

Hi Somers,

As other people have suggested, I would recommend either a hardware based VPN connection between both sites or a Terminal Server at your main site. Out of the two, I would base it on what hardware you already own.

Cheers, Budzy
