Road rally MA gearbox- lower final drive?

  • Hi all,

Just found this site after a serious amount of futile searching and I wonder if someone can help me. I navigate in road rally 205 XS and we are looking to try and lower the final drive. The standard box is pretty good but still too long for the lanes, ideally want a 4.5-4.9 cwp. Does anyone know if this is possible? I\'ve heard of a 1.4 Berlingo/Partner box that might do the job retaining the XS ratios and swapping to the lower final drive but haven\'t been able to find anything out? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks.

  • no such thing ever fitted to any ma boxs  in UK.
the right solution is to get a C/R  gear kit   £1200and use lowest std ratio you can find ,or get a gripper lsd +crown wheel +  ,pinion  -still lot of money    there are  no cheap ways .
the lowest std ratio ever used was in a 4 wheel drive ax --only lhd drive ,--good luck finding one
the lowest std ratios have been  14/60 and 13/59  crown wheel + pinions  in uk cars.

  • 13/59 is 4.53, that would be a useful improvement. Can you tell me what had that fitted as standard?

Knew the Berlingo box thing was a long shot, think someone has got mixed up with the 4.8 conversion that the 205 Gti challenge use in the BE boxes. Many thanks for the replies, appreciate the help.

  • without a c/r gear it  you will still not have the correct ratios to make a good well geared  car -all std rastios have too large a gap between them + top is too high .
as the dif is the first thing you fit to bare casings and last thing you remove you may want to consider fitting an lsd at same time --well worth the money in performance terms ,if you are using std crown wheel then go for the quaife  we do £460+ vat alot cheaper than a gripper and no servicing required .
not as much ulitmate grip but still  a good choice bearing in mind all the other factors .
but again as you can get a choice of dif ratios with  the gripper ,then maybe the £945+vat  is another option

  • The 1,4L petrol Berlingos/partners have the same final drives as the S1 106Rallye.

I`m not sure but i think they are 13/59.

Theres a a few useful threads on this on the RR register.
